The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova is an umbrella organization advocating for the Jewish community across Moldova, including in the Transnistria region.
We are a not-for-profit organization with no political affiliations and work with a range of local and international partners.
Our aims are to support Jewish religious life, fight against antisemitism and campaign for greater awareness of Moldova’s Jewish heritage through our education, cultural preservation and Holocaust restitution projects.
Although registered in its current form in 1997, the organization has a long history of supporting Jewish people in the region. The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova was previously known as the “Union of Jewish Communities of Bessarabia” founded by the Congress of Jewish delegations from 40 cities and towns of Bessarabia, modern day Moldova, on 3 November 1935.
We are the first port of call for understanding Jewish community interests and concerns in Moldova.
We warmly encourage and welcome you to contact us with any questions or enquiries you may have.
The number of Jewish people in Moldova is relatively small, numbering less than 20 thousand people. Nevertheless, Jewish people, culture and the religion of Judaism has a rich history and deep roots across the country.
The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova has worked hard to revive Jewish identity across the country by restoring community ties, supporting religious life and strengthening cooperation with international partners. We consider the preservation of Jewish history and heritage in Moldova to be one of the most important parts of our agenda.
From our head office in Chisinau, we promote regional and international cooperation by working with a range of partners. Every year we participate in and hold meetings both on a national and international level, attend international conferences and work with regional and international Jewish organizations.
We sincerely believe that the Jewish Community of Moldova deserves to be heard and should be actively represented on international Jewish platforms.
