On February 4, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Chișinău as part of the official opening of the Israeli Embassy in Moldova. Throughout the day, meetings were scheduled with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi, the Israeli Ambassador to Moldova H.E. Joel Lion, the Moldovan Ambassador to Israel H.E. Alexander Roitman, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of parliament, and leaders of the Jewish community.
As part of the Israeli delegation’s visit, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the monument to the victims of the Chișinău Ghetto. This act served as a symbol of respect for Holocaust victims and a reminder of the importance of preserving historical truth. Chișinău holds a special place in Jewish history, having witnessed the pogroms of 1903 and 1906, as well as the tragedy of the Holocaust.
During his meeting with the Israeli Foreign Minister, the President of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, Alexander Bilinkis, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between Moldova and Israel, as they share deep historical and cultural ties. He stressed the need to further develop diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations, with the opening of the Israeli Embassy in Chișinău being a crucial step in this direction. He also highlighted the necessity of Israel’s support in ensuring an objective and comprehensive study of Holocaust history in Moldova, including the role of neighboring states. Preventing Holocaust denial and distortion, especially in public discourse and education, remains critical. Unlike in neighboring countries, Holocaust studies in Moldova are still not mandatory, and this issue must be addressed.
The meeting also underscored that joint initiatives between Israel and Moldova can support the Jewish community through educational programs on Jewish history and culture, cultural exchanges, and social and economic initiatives.
The Jewish Community of Moldova remains committed to historical justice, combating anti-Semitism, and strengthening Jewish life. We look forward to Israel’s continued support and the deepening of cooperation in these key areas. The opening of an official diplomatic mission in Chișinău is a welcome step, as for many years, the Jewish community has played a partial role in maintaining bilateral relations between Moldova and Israel.
