On March 2, 2025 (2 Adar II 5785), a significant event took place at the Beit Yosef Synagogue in Chișinău—the solemn dedication of a new Torah scroll for the Jewish community of Moldova.
This sacred gift was made possible through the generosity of Dr Alex Rovt and Yuri Drukker, whose kindness and commitment continue to strengthen Jewish heritage and support Jewish life in Moldova.
The day was a true celebration for the entire community. Among those who delivered greetings were H.E. Joel Lion, Ambassador of the State of Israel to Moldova, Veaceslav Reabcinschi, Director General of the Agency for Interethnic Relations, and Angela Cutasevici, Deputy Mayor of Chișinău, along with spiritual and community leaders. The Vice President of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, Shabtai Hanucaev, emphasized the significance of the event, noting that the dedication of a Torah scroll is not just a religious tradition but a symbol of the revival and strengthening of Jewish life in the country. He presented the honored guests with commemorative bronze Torah scrolls as a token of gratitude, quoting the sacred words inscribed on them: “All Jews are responsible for one another.”
A special blessing was given by Rabbi Zion Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Rehovot and Or Yehuda, along with Rabbi Rachamim Belenky, whose synagogue is now home to the newly dedicated Torah scroll. The ceremony concluded with joyous dancing with the Torah, accompanied by live Jewish music.
This was truly a unique occasion, as the dedication of a new Torah scroll is a rare and momentous event in the life of any Jewish community. It serves as a testament to the enduring strength of Jewish traditions, passed down from generation to generation, and to the continued growth and resilience of Jewish life in Moldova.
May this new Torah scroll bring blessings, peace, and prosperity to the community! Mazal Tov!
