The annual “Seven Candles” Award Ceremony

The annual “Seven Candles” Award Ceremony once again brought together distinguished leaders, dedicated activists, and esteemed international partners whose efforts continue to inspire the growth and resilience of Moldova’s Jewish community and contribute to the broader development of society. This significant event serves as a platform that unites community members with key representatives of the Moldovan state, the diplomatic corps, and international organizations.

The award, a symbol of unity and gratitude, honors contributions in seven key areas: heritage preservation, spiritual life, cultural connections, youth programs and volunteerism, education, security, and humanitarian support.

1. Heritage Preservation

Alexander Pekel was recognized for his outstanding efforts in revitalizing Jewish community life in Soroca. Under his leadership, traditional Jewish holidays have been celebrated once again, and dialogue with local authorities has been restored. Special mention is made of the restoration of memorials in Cosăuți and the Jewish cemetery, initiatives supported by academician Gregory Roitberg.

2. Spiritual Life

Rabbi Shmuel Zalmanov was honored for his vital role in strengthening the spiritual life of the Jewish community. The Chabad Lubavitch religious organization, which was the first of its kind to operate in the Republic of Moldova, continues to make a profound impact. This award also pays tribute to Rabbi Abelsky, the founder of Chabad in Moldova, whose mission is being carried forward by his family.

3. Cultural Connections

  1. HE Ambassador Alexander Roitman was acknowledged for his invaluable contribution to strengthening relations between Moldova and State of Israel, with particular recognition for his scholarly work on the history of Bessarabian Jews.
    Marina Anukov, head of the “Nativ” representation in Moldova, was celebrated for her efforts in revitalizing the Israeli Cultural Center and launching essential cultural initiatives, including the Anthology of Israeli Literature.

4. Youth Programs and Volunteerism

The Jewish student organization Hillel received the award for its longstanding commitment to developing young leaders in Moldova and beyond. Special credit was given to regional director Joseph Axelrut for his dedicated support and guidance in fostering youth engagement.

5. Education

Professor Dr. Ivan Duminca was recognized for his leadership in establishing and implementing a national program to study Jewish history and culture. Larisa Samciuc, a teacher at the Herzl Jewish Lyceum, was commended for her significant role in developing a curriculum that ensures the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.

6. Security

The General Inspectorate of Police, represented by Mr. Alexander Bejan, was praised for its professionalism and unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Jewish community, even in times of challenge. His colleagues, including Galina Plesca, were equally recognized for their essential efforts in fostering trust and stability.

7. Humanitarian Support

The organization Olam Aid and its leader, Gal Rahman, were honored for their impactful humanitarian projects aimed at providing essential assistance to those in need.

The President of the Jewish Community of Moldova, Alexander Bilinkis, also congratulated Galina Karger on the 20th anniversary of the founding of the International Center for Training and Professional Development (ICTPD).

The “Seven Candles” Award serves as a powerful reminder that unity, mutual support, and cooperation are the cornerstones of building a better future. As noted by Alexander Bilinkis, this year’s laureates exemplify the highest values of dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the common good, inspiring us all to contribute to a stronger, more inclusive society.
