Working with Association of Former Prisoners of Ghettos and Concentration Camps
The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova has been working closely with its long term partner, the Association of Former Prisoners of Ghettos and Concentration Camps this summer.
We have been visiting survivors in local communities, understanding their needs, offering financial support and collecting testimonies for the purposes of education and awareness. These testimonies are powerful reminders of the horrors unleashed when hate against minority groups goes unchecked.
Former prisoners are a vital link to our past but sadly many are suffering from health challenges, lack of support and the effects of old age. Only 25 former prisoners of the ghettos remain in Moldova. It is our duty to help and support them after the trauma they have experienced.
Founded in 1998, the Association of Former Prisoners of Ghettos and Concentration Camps is Moldova’s non-governmental organisation working to support and protect those who faced injustice and trauma at the hands of fascism in our region.
Although JCM has also been a strong partner and advocate for the Association, it is thanks to a donation from the Buntin Foundation, USA, that we have been able to expand our work in this crucial area. We thank the immense generosity of the Buntin Foundation for helping us fulfil this mitzvah. We will continue this important project until the end of the year and follow up with a review of the testimonials collected.
